Something Old/Something New

Okay…why is it that every time you give something away, you want it back?! Whether it’s a week later or years later, it keeps happening! This blog tells the tale of my beloved portable CD player from junior high/high school.

I loved that thing and have such fond memories of listening to it in my room, on vacations, and in the high school gym on the bleachers. I have no idea when (or why) I decided to give it away. It was likely when iPods starting coming out. I still have the iPod I had freshman year of college (stay tuned for a future blog on all my old iPods I have uncovered)!

During one of my random, obsessive, nostalgic states, I became focused on finding the CD player. I couldn’t remember the brand. Pretty much all I remembered was that it was purple and had orange buttons. I also remembered the latch mechanism that opened it. I searched and searched for it with no luck. I forgot about it for a while but then months later, the obsession came back. I searched and searched again and FOUND IT! Thank goodness for people who keep such things! I found it on eBay, complete with the headphones, and everything in working order. The price was reasonable too! It almost seemed too good to be true, but I took a chance!

The whole experience is so satisfying - opening the lid, putting in the disc, closing it/locking it, and pressing the buttons. I definitely remembered the feel and sound of those orange buttons. It has also been so fun to thrift for CDs. I have quite a few CDs that I never gave away up in the attic, but unfortunately, I had given away a ton back in the day. Any thrifter will tell you though, the hunt is part of the fun!

In this streaming world we live in, I find myself craving the simpler times when everything wasn’t available in the palm of your hand and not everything was feeding instant gratification. It’s been really enjoyable to slow down a little, and as an added bonus, I’m saving money from cancelling my Spotify subscription!
